As part of the Axplora group, Farmabios is the leading global manufacturer of non-sterile and sterile steroids and offers custom development and manufacturing services of focused portfolio of High Potent Substances (HPS) and anticancer drugs. With decades of steroid chemistry expertise and ongoing research and development activities, Farmabios provides scientific expertise and state-of-the-art technologies to support the chemical development and cGMP manufacture of complex APIs from grams-scale to metric tons-scale, with extensive know-how in the production, handling and containment of steroids, hormones, cytotoxic and highly potent compounds.
Our history
1968
Farmabios SPA is created in Gropello, Pavia, Italy, beginning the production of steroid and vitamin B12 derivatives.
1985
Vitamin B12 derivatives production is discontinued; Farmabios doubles steroids output.
1997
Farmabios manufacturing site first audit and approval from US-FDA.
2004
Completion of the first High Potent production unit.
2007
Ergon Capital Partners (Belgium) acquires Farmabios SPA. Completion of the Sterile by filtration Steroids production unit.
2011
Ergon Capital Partners acquires PharmaZell and integrates PharmaZell and Farmabios into Zellbios S.A. Completion of the Cytotoxic production unit.
2014
Zellbios S.A. is acquired by Deutsche Private Equity (Germany). Constitution of Pharmazell Group GmbH.
2019
Beginning of in-house Micronization activities.
2020
BridgePoint (United Kingdom) acquires Pharmazell Group GmbH from Deutsche Private Equity (Germany).
2022
Farmabios is part of Axplora Group.
2023
Completion of High Potent API large scale production unit.

Founded in 1961 and located near Milan (Italy), Gropello Cairoli’s site comprises team of over 200 employees. It is a world leader in steroid chemistry, producing more than 80 APIs and advanced intermediates such as Corticosteroids & Hormones (sterile & non-sterile). It also has great expertise in the scale-up and production of HPAPIs, including cytotoxics, as well as cannabidiol (CBD). The site offers CDMO services and hosts Axplora’s center of excellence in solid state chemistry.
